FIRST ANNUAL N. GA CAKE CHALLENGE - SECOND PLACE WINNER IN ADVANCED CATEGORY

The Prize by Maria

I won second prize in the First N. Georgia Cake Challenge held in Dahlonega on August 4, 2007. The theme was Mountain Weddings.

I covered my cakes in light blue fondant to represent the sky. I wanted to make it look somewhat traditional but add some whimsy to it, so I decided I'd have a *tree* going through the cake which represented the growing relationship. The tree was covered in chocolate fondant and on each piece a heart was carved. On the bottom part the initials of the couple. The middle trunk said, "She said yes!" and the top trunk the wedding date. (Thanks to my daughter, Lily for that idea. Everyone loved it!)

I added ladybugs, bunnies, butterflies and the state flower and topped the cake with a bride and groom bears.

Each cake had a *branch* border and small flowers.

We had three hours to complete our cake and could only bring 20% of our decorations. Fortunately, we were allowed to bring the cake (real or dummy) completely iced.

It was a lot of fun and I was happy to have placed in the challenge. All the cakes were great and it was fun meeting fellow cake artists.

I want to thank my friends and family for their support.

Thank you Zoe (www.zomarboutique.com) for being my assistant and keeping me calm and making it even more fun!

Thanks to my daughters, Vic and Lily, especially Lily who came up with the idea of the carvings on the *tree trunks.*

Thanks to Roxanne who made the special sized board I needed.

Thanks to my young seven year old friend Sydney, who watched me work and told me I'd win because I'm a good caker.

Thanks to Anne and Kelly, my other *daughters*, who always ask me if I have cake scraps for them.

Thanks to Dawn (www.dawnbakescakes.com) for introducing me to this art.

Most of all to my husband, Robert, who is always supportive and helpful.

Love ya bunches!
