Please note: Cake tastings are for cakes serving 100 or more.
1. When should I order my cake?
For wedding cakes, we recommend you order your cake three to six months in advance. For special occasion cakes a two week advance order is appreciated. All wedding cake orders must be paid in full at least four weeks in advance of the event date.
For wedding cupcake sampler which includes two of the following flavors: white, lemon, almond and vanilla. If you'd like to sample a specialty flavor, there is a $5.00 charge. The sample I give has not been frozen for days or weeks before a tasting because I bake fresh for EVERY tasting. With your sample, you will get an idea of how fresh, moist and tasty the cake will be whatever flavor you choose.
2. How can I reserve my date?
A non-refundable $25.00 fee is required to reserve your date. This does not apply to the cost of the cake, but ensures your date and me are reserved for your special day. If your wedding is cancelled or you wish to cancel the order this fee is NOT refunded.
For special occasion cakes date is reserved when 50% deposit is made (of which $25.00 is non-refundable if you cancel) or when payment is made in full.
3. Do you have standard designs?
Yes. A classic design on a cake would be scrolls, basketweave or swiss dots. You can choose one of these designs at no extra cost, but please be aware some designs can only be done with certain icings.
4. How do I choose a design?
Choosing a design for your cake is almost as difficult as choosing your dress. Is the reception formal or informal? Indoors or outdoors? Think of your dress, your invitations, or even your napkins for some inspiration. Incorporating the color of the bridesmaids dress on the cake, whether with flowers, ribbons or icing is a timeless tradition. Look through magazines or online sites such as theknot.com or marthastewart.com for ideas.
5. If I see a wedding cake from a magazine can you copy it?
Yes, depending upon the cake design. Some cake pictures in magazines are digitally "perfected" to give it a flawless look. I try to be as exact as possible, but there might be some slight differences.
6. What is fondant?
Fondant is a sugar paste which creates a smooth texture. It is laid over buttercream iced cake. It has a sweet taste that can be flavored. It's almost like marshmallow. Some people love it, some don't. I roll it as thin as possible so you can taste the buttercream that is underneath.
7. What size are the servings?
It all depends on who is cutting the cake. A wedding size serving is usually 1" x 2" and are 4" high.
8. Do you stay and cut the cake?
I provide a cutting guide if needed, but most reception/catering halls are old hands at cutting wedding cakes. If you'd like for me to stay and cut the cake there is service charge of $100.00
9. What payment methods do you accept?
We accept checks, money orders and all major credit cards. Final payment of wedding cake must be made a month before wedding date.
10. Do you do cakes for bachelor or bachelorette parties?
I do cakes that are tasteful and not explicit. Email me for samples of designs.
11. Do you do character cakes like Betty Boop, Hello Kitty, Spiderman, etc?
After doing research I do them only for family as gifts. The ones you see on my site like Wonder Woman, Elmo cookies, etc were done for friends and family at no charge.
In the United States, copyright infringement (copying or using a design/character that is copyrighted) is a crime unless you have a copyright license from the creator. They only have to prove the act of copying was committed. They do not need to prove guilty intent. In other words, they do not need to prove you didn't know it was illegal.
If it is recognizable as a copyrighted character, even though the colors are different, it is still copyright infringement.
I can, however, use licensed figurines, edible images and decorations made especially for cake decorating.
12. What is the difference between getting my cake from you rather than the supermarket?
Custom cake designers usually bake fresh and their icings are usually made for your particular order. That is exactly what I do. Most, if not all, supermarkets get their cakes in frozen and use ready made buttercream icing (and it usually contains no butter). This is why custom cake designers prices are higher than the supermarkets. You are getting a fresh baked cake with fresh made icing. A wedding cake that feeds 200 may cost you under $200 at the supermarket. With a custom cake designer the cost will at least double maybe triple. My prices start at $2.95 per serving. Let me know your budget and we can work together to give you the cake of your dreams.
13. Why does pricing vary from one designer to another?
There might be several reasons. 1. The designer may be new in the field and trying to drum up business by offering a lower price. 2. In a particular area, even within the same state, the market can only bear so much. So a designer in the city might get $5.00 per serving whereas a rural area designer might only be able to charge $2.00 per serving. This in no way reflects the skill of the designer or the taste of the cake. In NYC for example, an inexpensive designer would charge $9.00 per serving. 3. The designer may not have done their research and priced higher or lower than the average price for his/her area. 4. The designer is in high demand and can charge higher than the average price for his/her area.
Whatever the reason, browse their websites, read their testimonials, get a taste sample. (Cake designers do offer samples of their cakes to wedding couples. If your event is not that large, you can always order a small cake from them to taste.)
14. How many cakes do you book a day?
At most, I will do two wedding cakes in one day. I make sure I have plenty of time to deliver and set up the cake myself (barring any emergencies). Not only does this ensure a freshly baked creation, but also ensures my attention is given exclusively to each client's event.
In regards to special occasion cakes, the same applies. I make sure full creative attention is given to each cake design.
